Communicating and Implementing a
100% Tobacco-Free Schools Policy
An opportunity for in-service training on strategies to successfully
communicate and enforce a 100% tobacco-free school policy
“We passed a 100% Tobacco-Free School Policy (or we want to) – how do we enforce it?” is a frequent question asked by school district staff and local tobacco control advocates. The NC Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch has designed an in-service training program to provide the answers to this question and others.
Workshop Purpose: To help your school district successfully enforce a 100% tobacco-free school policy
This workshop will help your school district develop a plan of action for enforcing a 100% tobacco-free school policy. It will benefit school districts that already have the policy in place – and want to improve enforcement, as well as school districts that are considering the policy and want more information on effective enforcement strategies. In-service participants will:

Analyze potential enforcement obstacles and challenges to enforcing a 100% tobacco-free school policy in their school district. |

Gain techniques for identifying and overcoming enforcement obstacles and challenges. |
|
Identify programs and services to support the policy. |
|
Learn effective communication strategies to increase awareness among students, staff and school supporters. |
|
Understand the components of a comprehensive policy enforcement plan. |
Examples of effective communication and enforcement strategies from other school districts that are 100% tobacco-free will be shared in an interactive, 2-hour session using case studies, group contributions and discussion.
Would you like this workshop to be held in YOUR school district?
The in-service training workshop will take place at your school district for groups of five or more. Ideally, groups will include a mix of school and community representatives who will be addressing policy communication and enforcement in the school district. These might include principals, assistant principals, community or media relations staff, school resource officers, law enforcement officials, student leaders and others. There is no cost for the in-service and all training materials will be provided.
